Colby O’ Donis: Above and Beyond

By: Hannah Bateman

From making a hit song with Lady Gaga to performing alongside Akon, pop and R&B singer Colby O’Donis is well on his way to achieving greatness.  After taking the world by storm in 2008 with his debut album, Colby O, and his smashing hit singles, “What You Got,” and “Beautiful,” Colby is destined to put his stamp on the music industry in the years to come. Although his confidence, poise, and passion will take him very far, his ability to look beyond the negativity that surrounds his success will take him even further. Take a look.

Bu’Ji Magazine (BM): Tell me about your upcoming album.

Colby O’Donis (CO): I am putting the finishing touches on it. I really want it to be right so that is what we are focusing on right now. I feel like as an artist for this album, I have grown a lot tremendously. I would say vocally and on subjects that I sing to. I am really excited for [listeners] to see this side of me.

BM: What do you hope to accomplish with this album?

CO: I want to be able to enjoy what I do and share my music and inspiration with my fans.

BM: What is one obstacle that you overcame that you feel others might be able to relate to?

CO: There are always going to be obstacles and haters [because] it comes with the territory, but if you have the right head on your shoulder and believe in your talent you can overcome that. Like you said, “Be who you are.”

BM: If you could work with any artist, who would it be and why?

CO: Ludacris. I am big fan of him. Lyrically, I just love his lyrics because they are so much fun and he also has his inspirational lyrics. To me, he is an all-around artist.

BM: Who or what has been you biggest inspiration?

CO: In music it would be Michael Jackson (R.I.P) and my dad would be my inspiration in life. [Also,] Akon has definitely been a big mentor to me.

BM: Where do you see yourself two years from now and what steps are you taking to get there?

CO: Still being here sharing my music, my inspiration, my growth as a person and an artist, and still selling records.

BM: What is one thing someone would not know about you by listening to your music?

CO: I am really a fun and chill dude.

BM: What is one thing that you absolutely cannot live without?

CO:  My studio.

BM: Describe yourself in three words.

CO: Fun, loving and energetic.

BM: What is your favorite quote? Or what words do you live by?

CO: “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
