Bu'Ji Magazine: What does it mean to be an effective leader?
Shalee Forney: To be an effective leader, you have to have an overall purpose of pursuing the betterment of the whole. It means you understand the difference between knowing when to be a leader and when to be a follower.
Bu'Ji Magazine: What is the most important decision you've had to make as a leader?
Shalee Forney: The most important decision I've had to make as a leader is learning when to take a risk -- not being afraid of the unknown. You will never know if you don't try. When I decided to step out on faith and accept my calling as a voice for the youth, it was a huge risk. But it has been worth the challenge.
Bu'Ji Magazine: What are three characteristics that you believe every leader should possess and why?
Shalee Forney: I believe every leader should be motivational, bold and consistent. You have to possess the motivation and desire to lead. You have to be bold because you're the spokesperson for the whole and you are constantly stepping up to the plate. You have to be consistent because it shows your dedication and your will power.
Bu'Ji Magazine: In what ways have you promoted change and inspired others to be their best?
Shalee Forney: I have promoted change through my website called "Keeping the Dream Alive" and my blog called "Youth Buzz." Through these two websites I have been able to inspire and encourage many different people through writing, mentoring, and community service in and outside my church. Also, I believe I have been able to promote change by being a mirror image of exactly what I write, by saying what I mean and meaning what I say.
Bu'Ji Magazine: What advice would you offer to others seeking leadership positions or roles within the community?
Shalee Forney: I would say do not be afraid of being what you know you can be. Never let another person or a thing hinder you from living out your full potential. Also, knowing the right time to lead. With leadership, timing is everything. Sometimes you have to have been led in order to lead.
