The Rising Suns Are Heating Up the Music Scene
By: Bu'Ji Magazine
Whoever said hip-hop and rock could never become one has officially been proven wrong. Howard University graduates Khafre Zimmerman, Jacob Fitzhugh, and Vance Lewis have creatively joined forces to form The Rising Suns, a band that is musically inclined and passionate about bringing a unique style to a saturated music industry. Their ability to create, mix, and perform music from different genres like hip-hop, soul, and rock n'roll proves that this dynamic trio is well on their way to becoming one of the most sought after bands. With their music careers on the rise, The Rising Suns took advantage of the opportunity to talk to you about how their creativity led them to do the seemingly impossible. Take a look.
Bu'Ji Magazine: What does creativity mean to you?
The Rising Suns (Jacob): Our creativity define us, we are what we create. King Zimm, Vance and myself all come from different backgrounds and with it, different artists have shaped our creativity. We never knew a thing about artist like Tower of Power, Muse, or Eric B & Rakim until we came together as The Rising Suns. Creativity in our business is the kind that feeds on itself to grow. We all have the ability alone to create a single genre of music, but together feeding off of each other's different musical talents, interests, and influences we become a unique brand of music that no one can create but us.
Bu'Ji Magazine: What are your creative talents and how were they discovered?
The Rising Suns (Jacob): I've always had a knack for writing banger guitar riffs in a matter of seconds. I can hear the music as if I've already played it. I've even started sleeping with my guitar and a readied recorder so I never miss a thing just like Keith Richards. Discovering my talent for this just came with getting better at guitar or any other instrument I tried to express my thoughts on. It's always been there I just wasn't experienced enough to express it.
Bu'Ji Magazine: How has being creative benefited you?
The Rising Suns (Jacob): We've only just started and already we've been in contact with so many different artists. Just at Howard University we could name a dozen phenomenal singers, rappers, and musicians. Being a part of a musical collective there is so much wealth to be had and applying our creativity to music is like our golden ticket into that scene.
Bu'Ji Magazine: How have you created success?
The Rising Suns (Jacob): There hasn't been an individual or a crowd that we've played for that hasn't rocked and flowed with our music. That in itself is a great success. We're creating a movement that is bringing crowds that originally loved only hip-hop or rock into one genre which we happily coin as Rock N' Flow, [which] is like a music love child in the making.
Bu'Ji Magazine: How would you recommend others discover their creative talent and cultivate it?
The Rising Suns (Jacob): Oh boy! You've got to try your hand at everything! Never say no to an opportunity [because] there is no telling where it will take you, what paths you will follow from it, and it's never too late to try something new. You should surround yourself around creative people, get involved with the scene, and believe us when we say it things will take shape from there. You never know who's watching you at a show or how or what you're doing impacts someone else. Vance and King Zimm met at Howard, Zimm was outside playing guitar and Vance asked if he wanted to start a band and the rest is history.
